East Austin Succulents

It's been several weeks since we made went on the succulent road trip, but I still have to share my finds from East Austin Succulents.  I'm just going to say that this place could be dangerous!  I have very little, if any, self control when I'm in a greenhouse loaded with succulents.  I don't have all the names, but here's what I found.

I think he said this is a 'Luna' Echeveria

Kalanchoe...she's burgundy, not sure the variety

I can't remember the same, but adore this variegated guy!

He didn't know the name either, but it looks like elk horns.

Kalanchoe 'Scallops'...see the babies that are growing on the leaves?  That's why she came home with me!

That's it for East Austin Succulent's haul!  I've said it before, but it's a really good thing that this nursery is also 1 1/2 hours from my house.  I could get in serious trouble!  Other than my fun finds, I really enjoyed talking to the owner about different plants and loved that he treats his collection to fun music.  Very unique place, and if you're ever in Austin, you should definitely swing by.

Tea Rooms and Succulents

We tried a new little deli today...it was a totally chickie tea room type deli/bakery; very girly girl!  If you're in San Antonio, it's called Sugar Baker's and is the cutest place I've been in ages! The food was delicious and the desserts looked out of this world yummy, but we were very self controlled and said "no thanks". I can't wait to take my best friend there...I love it when I find the cool spots first; it doesn't happen often! So, afterwards my coworker says, "Let's swing by Rack Room.  I want to look at their sandles."  I'm always up for a shoe adventure, so we took detour.  On the detour, some succulents in front of Whole Foods caught my eye and it was my turn to ask if we could make one more stop.  They had the neatest looking thing and I had never seen it before, so I started gathering them while she walked down to the next store.

Portulaca molonkiniensis 'Maraca'

This is a Portulaca molonkiniensis 'Maraca'.  It grows 12" - 18", enjoys full sun to part shade and produces the most beautiful yellow blooms.  I found out that last part after a quick Google search.  It's going to be the first one that goes in the giant pot...I think!

The plants I've been "succulent sitting" for my mother have had a rough time of it.  We had almost 2 weeks of rain, rain and more rain so they weren't too thrilled.  One of them that we liked the most didn't make it.  Wouldn't you know they had that one too!  In the picture below, it's the first of the three.  Not sure what it's called, but it really reminded me of the old "rabbit ear" anteneas.  The second is some type of Gasteria, that I thought was really nice and fat. The ones we have are much skinnier. The third is yet another Cotyledon Tomentosa ' Bear Paw'.  I know I didn't need that one, but none of ours have the brown tips that look like nails so I thought we needed it too. These are my mothers, mine are scattered about the colllection so as not to draw undue attention from my husband's noticing eye!

The sales clerk was working with them while I was there and is a fellow "succulent addict".  I think I might have helped create two more monsters in the check out line as well.  The guy in front of me thought they were very cool and then the cashier had questions as well.  Would you believe both men's question was, "How do they do with not so much water?".  They were happy to hear they thrive on neglect! So I did my part in spreading the word today...and I didn't buy any shoes.  That alone counts for something!

Looking forward to another relaxing weekend and hopefully will enjoy it minus the headache that's been my constant companion for two days now!  Fixing to break out the heavy duty migraine killers since the usual Advil hasn't touched it...I just love the mold in the air!!

Garden Finds

My coworker's Lollipop Plant that we picked up a few weeks ago on our first Shades of Green adventure encountered a mishap...all she has is a stalk with no clue as to where the rest of it went!  Needless to say, I volunteered to take us back over so she could get a replacement.  I picked up a Crassula 'Propeller Plant'...very cool and I still need to take the picture, but I was realy enthralled with all the wrought iron shelves and such that they had.  I really need, want one that looked like an oriental screen with baskets to sit your plants in.  It was nice and tall and really wide as well, too bad it was over $200...not quite in the budget now, but give me some time to plot.  Next time I'm there I'll take a picture so you can see it for yourself.  I found the most adorable fountain that I did remember to take a picture of though.

I thought this was too cute not to share!  This nursery is quickly becoming one of my favorite places...I could probably spend hours in there roaming through the different areas.

Weekend Wrap-Up

I can't believe the weekend is already coming to a close.  It doesn't seem like we rested much, but we did get quite a bit done.  My husband sent me to Walmart to pick up a storage cabinet while he did the yard Friday night, and I brought that home as well as 5 new plants.  The driveway conversation that night was how I'm an addict and need help...for plant purchases that is!  I told him if he found me a group that I would consider attending...good luck with that! The purchase I was most excited about was a non-succulent...a balloon plant that had white and purple blooms on the same plant and they're a double bloom!

My girls finished their Spring Volleyball Season Saturday, so now we can look forward to sleeping in again on the weekend!  I can't tell you how much I've missed that little pleasure!!  Not to mention not having to scramble around and get white/black laundry together Friday night...I really should get better about that!

Sunday brought more plants to my yard.  My neighbor (aka my partner in crime) went with me to Rainbow Gardens and Home Depot in search of Lantana and Pentas...we found both as well a few succulents that I needed for my strawberry pot experiment.  I wanted Hen and Chicks, but only found one variety, so I made due with pieces from my Cobweb Hen and Chick, two types of the String of Buttons Crassula, a String of Pearls, Calico Kitten and a dinky little Hen and Chick that a coworker had brought into me. 

I planted the Pentas under a tree in my backyard where they're safe from the deer.  Then today while we were miniature golfing, I saw where they had put Coleus right next to the trunk and then the Pentas in front.  Of course that meant I had to make another trip to Rainbow Gardens today and then I rearranged everything because I adore Coleus.  I tried some that are supposed to like the sun, so we'll see.  I think I'm good for now...hoping they fill in quickly as patience is not one of my better virtues!

I suppose there might be some truth to my husband's "addict" theory, but the way I see it, there are worse things I could be doing!  I know this was probably way to long, but I had a lot to say and it's been several days...enjoy the week!
