When I planted everything in the spring, I had no way of knowing how everything would grow. I've been shocked at how fast and full things have filled in, so I needed to rearrange a few things. In doing that, I ended up rescuing a bunch of leaves. The ones in the two stackable ones are leaves that need to root and the ones I the silver tin had begun to root already. Then there is the pile of Kalanchoe cuttings that I'm going to share.

Hopefully, I'll have more babies than I'll know what to do with!

The cleaned up beds will be another post for another day...

Happy Gardening!

Mandy
Mandyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13449390713125491458noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3561028386849796907.post-29957887146771285102013-08-25T00:16:00.002-05:002013-08-25T00:19:02.440-05:00Front Succulent Beds

It's been a while, but that's another story for another day. I have been going stir crazy not writing about my recent, or not so recent succulent happenings though.

Since we brought Thing One and Thing Two, aka Charlie and Molly, home one and a half years ago, things have been a little stunted in the gardening area.

First, they decided that anything in the ground make for a great jungle like adventure and they took great joy in flatening anything taller than them in the back yard. The potted things up on shelves survived until they realized that it was great fun knocking them over, tearing the contents apart and listening to Momma lecture. By the way, the Kalachoe 'Chandelier Plant' has never truely recovered from this attack.

Then came the greenhouse that had to be put behind a quickly put up fence after said puppies learned they could bust through and <strike>destroy</strike> relocate my plants and then make their escape.

Keeping things behind the fence worked great all last summer.

Then came the new greenhouse and a rather blustery Christmas Day and all that went to pot. After having to spend the rest of the winter in the garage; thus kicking me and my car out of it, I decided enough was enough and put them all in the ground. My friend Amy has her succulents in her back yard for the most part and they always do awesome during the summer. I figured that since my front yard gets the same sun as her back yard that I'd just throw caution to the triple digit summers and give it a whirl.

And so the experiment begins. Mixed in are some hibiscus that were either rescued from the crazy ants at the coast or added to my jungle from lack of self control. While I was at it with the succulents, I decided to give these a chance to show off in the ground as well.

These next few photos were taken back in May when I was taking serious heat from my husband for junking up his gargae and the front yard.

The bed above has one hibiscus on the left corner. There is a Euphorbia 'Jacob's Ladder' and then is flanked by my newest hibiscus (at time of photo) that I absolutely adore. I put the Kalanchoe 'Pinata' in a pot to add variety and keep it from taking over. A Euphorbia 'Firestick' takes the middle spot of the bed and is loving it. The Kalancho 'Fang' is one of my favs, next to that. There are a mix of others including the Kalachoe 'Flapjack' and 'Fantastic' finishing off this side.

Another angle of the left side. I lost the Euphorbia a the far right side, so that is empty at the present moment. I rescued a few pieces, and am hoping that they'll grow and I can put it back here when they get to a decent size. My pig and red pots are loving their spots on the porch again.
The front porch has always been home to a number of my succulents, with a few additions this year. The Epiphyllum strictim 'Queen of the Night' is loving her new home up here and has given me lots of pretty blooms this season. The varigated cactus is new this year to the front porch and is growing like a weed!

The bed to the right of the door is home to a number of my favorites. Let's start with the Euphorbia 'Lady Slipper' that is in the pot at the left side of the bed. I had her in the ground at one point, and had to rescue her from the puppies. Since then, she's been in this pot and if her growth is any indication; loving her pot! The back row is home to more Euphorbia's...'Pencil Stick', two that I don't know their fun names and the 'Red Bird Cactus'. The hibiscus on the end is about at the end of my trial period and soon to be relocated. There is a beautiful varigated 'Crown of Thorns' being hidden, so some rearranging is in order. The Kalanchoe beharanis - both fuzzy and non-fuzzy cap off the ends of the second row. Kalanchoe 'Silver Spoons and 'Bronze Spoons' are enjoying their new home as well.

These weren't the best pictures due to the river rock that took the place of mulch thanks to the neighborhood cats, but they are growing and I will post new pictures later. The back row is shocking as to how fast it filled in.

The next group is just an update on the front tree succulents that I planted last year. They survived the winter and have also done great over the summer this year. I lost a few things, but for the most part, what you see is part of the original planting from this original post and this updated post. I did add some things when I did the beds above as well to try and get everything I could in ground.
I should have put a warnig that this one was going to be long, but hey...if you got to this point of the post, you are probably as crazy for succulents as I am!! If that's not the case, thanks for hanging in there!

Happy Planting!
A few weekends ago, my friend and I stayed home from the coast and went on a hunt. As usual, Shades of Green had several things that we couldn't go home without. One of them was this cool little Huernia. I was really excited that she had a bloom on her so I didn't have to think about the possibility of me having it already.

Is this not darling!!
Of course, the piece with the bloom on it fell off on the ride home, so Amy's got it rooting across the street. I'm looking forward to many more cool little blooms from her.

I'm off to search out her name... That didn't take long. I no sooner posted this that I found it, Huernia Procumbens.

My plant has a real, bonified name!! Meet Kalanchoe Mortagei Crenata, with much thanks to my Florida blogger friend, Julie at A Succulent Life for her tenacious researching skills!! She found it on this really cool website that I somehow had forgotten about Glasshouse Works, let's just be clear that I've now added this to my favorite list so I don't lose it again! They have it with the fun name of 'Mother of Hundreds', but I much prefer my nickname of 'Big Mama Donkey Ears'. These leaves are so much larger than my regular 'Donkey Ear' has ever gotten. Of course, I lost my original plant after she bloomed. Once they bloom, they begin to die, so I'm on year one of babies trying to get big and beautiful. Thankfully my neighbor friend, Amy, has a ton of them as well in case there's an emergency and I need more.

I'll have to take pictures of the plantlets on this one, they are very different as well. They seem to have a ball that connects to the leaf with bigger roots. It makes them a little odd to put in the dirt, but we're working on that.

Thank you again, Julie! I believe you should go by the title of Succulent Rock Star from this point forward!

Make it a great day!

In one of our weekend coast trips, Amy and I spent the day visiting local nurseries. At a new one to us, I found what looked like a Donkey Ear, but without the mottled leaves. I saw it from two rows over and knew that if it was less than $25 that it was coming home with me. At our nurseries in San Antonio, this baby would have been that at a minimum just based on sheer size alone. That being said, I cautioulsy slid through recently watered muddy ailses and hit pay dirt!

This baby was $12.50 and it was huge! It was tagged 'Donkey Ear' and the little plantlets grow on it's leaves the same as the one I already have, but the leaves are much longer, fatter and not have spots like the one below. I bought a few other things and ended up getting her for $9.00!!! Talk about making Mandy a happy girl! We pulled off a number of babies and still had a bunch left on the plant. If anyone knows anything about this different variety of the Donkey Ear, please share. I've Googled until I gave up because I can only get the one below to show up.

These were all taken at the beginning of August, so they'd had about five months to take root and get happy. There is noticible growth in most since my first post Front Yard Succulents.
I was shocked that the majority of them held in there during the intense heat of the summer. I have also come to face the sad fact that aeoniums and a number of the hen and chicks just aren't cut out for San Antonio summers.
Recently I relized that I'd been missing the blooms on my Epiphyllum guatemalense 'Curly Locks', but was excited to see a ball that got pinker each day. After a bit of Googling, I discovered that it was a seed pod.

I planted them over two evenings...it took forever to put these tiny seeds on the dirt with tweezers. They are already starting to sprout. I did three sections the first night, and even since this picture they've grown more! The sections I planted just a few nights ago already have sprouts! I put three or four seeds in each section. There were still a number of seeds left and those went in the green pot you can kind of see next to this thing.

This is extremely exciting in my book! Just think how many baby 'Curly Locks' this succlent momma could end up with if all goes well!

A littel side note on the blooms, I would have seen the last one except the darn thing opened the last weekend that we went to the coast. I thought about staying to see it, but didn't think my husband would have appreciated that. I did notice yesterday though that I have two little blooms just starting again. They only bloom at night and are just a one-nighter...you have to be quick to see these darlings!

Happy planting!

A few weeks ago, we got a new front door that has red accents in the glass. I thought it would look nice to have red pots on porch, but I couldn't find any in the size or color that I wanted. Instead I opted to pick up pots that were the size I wanted and just spray paint them. I also have a pig planter on the porch as well, and painted it black. The finished project came out very nicely I think.
This next one is my mailbox planter at the curb. I planted the Crassula 'Campfire' last year in the fall. It survived the winter and is growing strong. The other thing with the white flowers is something that I had at the beginning of spring last year that died out. It won't last too long into the summer, but I figured since it's there that it could stay. I love the way this one gets so red in the full sun. It doesn't hurt that it's a fast grower, even in the hotter months.

Planted here, they have a chance to survive without being mauled and ripped apart by naughty puppies. I started with the tree planter; 24 lovely little succulents of various varieties are loving their new home here.
My last grouping came out blurry, but this is the majority of them. In the few weeks since I've planted them, they have all had a little growth. I'm really hoping that we won't have another summer like last year. If we can at least have a couple of weeks of 80/90 degree weather, they might grow a little more before stalling for the summer.

Last month I posted about a new kalanchoe that I found here. Most of the kalanchoes that I have grow babies on their leaves while they're on the plant, but if I've read it right this one prefers to have the leaves off in order to grow babies. I figured that I could spare two leaves and since the table is already cluttered with plants I would just add two more containers.

I put one leaf in water and one just on dirt to see which did the best.
Good action that is, and not more puppy destruction!

I bought this one again because of it's blooms. They're dusty shade of pink. I think it's an Echeveria variety, but all that's coming to mind is 'blue'...I'm sure it's part of the name, but also sure that there's more to it as well.

The recent purchase from East Austin Succulents is finally open. I still don't know what it is, but I love the orange shade.
I think my Kalanchoe thyrsiflora 'Fantastic' is protesting being in the greenhouse. This is the first time she's bloomed and I'm excited to see these open. I'll share those once I get to see them.
In the meantime, she's gotten quite tall. She was one of the one's that got trampled in the last "let's bust throught the greenhouse and see what we can eat" escapade of Thing One and Thing Two. More on that here. With that said, she took quite a beating and is less a good number of leaves on the bottom. This summer, she started growing crooked, so come spring I'll chop it off and replant the top.

I wish I could remember the blog, but I'm pretty warn out right now, so maybe it will come to me later. I know I follow it, which makes my "I'm tired" pretty sad, but the more important thing right now is that I found one of my own!
After a quick lunch on Friday, we realized that we still had a full half hour left and made a mad dash to Schultz Nursery. They don't always have a wide variety of succulents, and it's still not time for them to have them in the first place, but it's close and I generally have good luck here. Friday was no exception. We walked in and I immediately saw her...

It so happens that East Austin Succulents is one of their suppliers and this was just brought in. They had no clue what it was, much what it's cutesy blooms look like. A quick Google search on my phone confimed that this was indeed the plant that I thought I'd have to search months for.

According to another website I was on, it's also called a 'Miracle Plant' and a number of other neat names. I personally like 'Mexican Love Plant' and 'Floppers' I found some neat information on it on this website Gardening On Cloud Nine and Garden In Paradise is the blog I originally found it on. Kimberly has the pretty blooms on her blog.

The dogs are driving me bonkers and the kids have resorted to calling me on the house phone from their cell phones...I can take a hint...Mandytime is over!
She seems to be loving the winter weather and is blooming. Her actual leaves aren't that pretty at the present moment, but the blooms are beautiful and she's got a number of babies growing as well.

It seems as though these blooms are more waxy than the blooms I've gotten from other Echeveria's. I'm not sure if it's becuase of the bloom time or if it's just a natural defense from the cooler weather. They're also larger than one's from other plants; I'm guessing that's a result of the plant's size as well.

I'm going to pull her out of the ground in the next week or so and get her in the greenhouse or at least take some of the new plants off and tucked away.
Mandyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13449390713125491458noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3561028386849796907.post-36411562891218587602012-01-22T21:15:00.000-06:002012-01-22T21:15:36.053-06:00New Beds for the PuppiesAt the beginning of January, I picked up a new "living room" bed for Charlie, and he really does enjoy it. Molly always opts for the carpet, so I really wasn't worried about getting her one. That was working all well and good until I rearranged the living room and Molly discovered the "cool" bed! Charlie wasn't really appreciating her in his spot, even if he wasn't laying in it to begin with, so we picked her up one today. Molly likes to lay up on things, so we went for one with the raised edges. She's been trying it out in spurts this evening and so far, so good!
I exercised a bit of self control and was rewarded with an email from East Austin Succulents letting everyone know that they were having a sell. My friend Amy and I did the only logical thing any succulent obsessed gardener would do...we hopped in the car and made the hour and a half road trip to Austin! They had moved since the last time we were there, and I had really been wanting to see their place as well. I remembered my camera this time. These are just a few shots of their lovely new greenhouse. This top one is an aloe that I also snapped a picture of the name tag. It's one I'll be looking for.

A Kalanchoe of some sort...it's not the panda plant because it's much fuzzier than that. I'll figure it out eventually! My main concern was that it was one I didn't have and I wasn't about to leave it there.

I think this next one is in the gasteria family or something like that. She's nice and fat and a very nice color!

Another Kalanchoe that I might have, but then again, it could be one Charlie ate and I just haven't noticed. Either way, this one has a bunch of pretty little blooms just about to open, so it only made sense to bring her home.

I think this one is a Crassula. I had one this past summer, but the intense heat of the crazy summer burned it right up. I'll be more careful with this one.

And my most odd find on this trip...a variegated Kalanchoe beharensis 'Felt Leaf' or 'Elephant Ear'. I have the normal one, but this one is variegated and I really needed it. In fact, I had already paid for my original purchases and spied this lovely when I was taking pictures of Eric's other lovely succulents.

Had Eric been there, I most likely would have come home with all the names, but the name hunt is part of the fun.

If you're in Austin, you'll want to take a detour and stop by East Austin Succulents. For me, it's well worth the drive to spend the hour or so perusing through the interesting and sometimes special finds.
I wondered why they were being so quiet the other day and a peek around the side of the house explained it all.

I keep all my extra plastic and little terracotta pots in my tiny greenhouse that I used a few years back. Basically, it's just a shelving unit with a plastic cover that I started using for the pot storage. I put the cover on it so that rain water wouldn't accumulate in pots. Thing One and Thing Two however thought it had a much more useful purpose...shredding the plastic so they could then rip apart and disperse the plastic pots all over the yard.
Someone, we think it was Daugher #2 spouted off with, "What, spaghetti?". You should know that Daughter #1 is a master at spaghetti, I'm pretty sure she'd make it everyday for two out of three meals if you let her. I thought it was a brilliant idea, and asked if she needed to make a trip to the store for her plan. She did, so we got together and braved the Sunday afternoon crowd at HEB. I asked her before we left what she had in mind, but she wanted to wait until we got in the car to tell me so no one else wouledhear. Once in the car, she described baked ziti. That happens to be something all of us enjoy, and still pretty close to her spaghetti comfort zone. While at the store, she decided on cookies too, but we haven't seen those yet.

We got home and she went right to work. I helped a little bit with the draining of the meat and pasta since both made for heavy pots, but she did the majority of the work on her own.

We all agreed that she did a fabulous job, and I couldn't be more proud of her! I can't promise, but I'll be surprised if I don't come home to freshly baked cookies today since she didn't get to them last night...yummy!

It just so happened that my mother's birthday was coming up, so I ordered one for both of us. Mine arrived a week ago and I adore it!!

I ordered them from The Succulent Perch. You can find her on Facebook or email her at thesucculentperch@hotmail.com for a catalogue and order form. They make a really nice gift and are definitely out of the norm. She takes care to try and include succulents that do well in your area as well as will send detailed care instructions. She also includes a list of what succulents are used in your birdhouse. That was pretty smashing for someone like myself who loves details.

After getting a quick shower with the kitchen sink sprayer, mine perked up quite nice from the travel and is enjoying her spot on the kitchen table. In the spring I'll move her outside, but for now she'll enjoy the light from the back window. I'm looking forward to watching it fill in, and since succulents are good about doing that I shouldn't have to wait long!

From Thing One...

Their entrance is taped up now, but they snapped a few branches of my 'Red Bird' Cactus and the non-variegated Jacob's Ladder...they're really the same thing, but one's variegated and the other's not.

This one made me the most irritated.

They're coming very close to being strung up by their not so little necks if they don't knock it off!

I thought about what to do while out Christmas shopping with my oldest and decided on fencing it off.

The trip to Home Depot proved to be less expensive that I'd originally thought and the guy that helped me was a great help in getting me exactly what I needed without any overkill. I think he felt sorry for me when I explained what I was doing and why.

My youngest helped me get the posts where we wanted them and then covered up the damaged window. Needless to say, that window won't be getting opened. We also have an issue with this awful post from the phone company next to the greenhouse. They've been working on it and some nincompoop left a ton of exposed wires, one that the dogs helped cut in half, so I decided to just fence off the whole space. Amy got home just as I was bringing the fencing back, and we got right to work. She taught me how to use a post pusher inner...it's amazing how easy things work when you do them right!

The cinder blocks help hold the covering down so the wind doesn't pick them up. It's also come in handy to to keep out heathens. It's classy I know, but the upturned laundry basket is covering the electrical outlet post that is there for the pool and my heater. If they don't see it, they're less likely to want it. I can untie and fold back the fence to get in and out. Thankfully I don't go out everyday unless it's cold and I have the heater or lamp on.

I finally picked up the first one and when I finally started reading it, it was another one of those mad dashes to try and find the other two.

The series begins with Like a Well Watered Garden. Mibby Garret is doing good to get out of bed and stumble through the day after unexpectedly loosing her husband in a bicycle accident just six months earlier. It's not until she realizes that the only thing to eat in the house is Kool-Aid and crackers that she decides somethings got to give. Mibby loves gardening and is a garden designer. In the midst of continuing the kitchen remodel that she began with her husband and trying to keep her finances above water, Mibby begins to get back into life. A mysterious stranger's arrival threatens to unravel it all.

In book two, Always Green, Mibby continues to struggle through her new role as single parent to a now teenage son as well as her struggling business. The opportunity for romance trickles in, but Mibby isn't convinced that there's a man out there measures up to her deceased husband. Between pesky clients and house emergencies, Mibby's life is far from boring.

Book three, In Every Flower, would be a give away for the other two if I told you about it, so I won't. It is just as enjoyable as the previous two, so I'd really suggest getting your hands on all three to prevent any mad searches.

My favorite part of these books aside from the whole storyline was how author Patti Hill begins each chapter. Each chapter number is a date in her garden journal.

July 20
Patchy clouds raised the humidity but that's all. Tough year to keep potted plants happy. Next year, add polymer granules to the soil. Good news; pincushions and butterfly flowers blooming well in the heat. yay!

There were bits of gardening dispersed throughout all three books and that just made it all the more enjoyable of a series.
It was raining and so I only let the puppies out just to eat and do their business before putting them back in their kennel so I could go back to sleep. They did incredibly well at that and I was able to get another two hours of sleep in. About 9 a.m., I was putting the ornaments on the tree, looked out the back window and realized that the zipper door was up on the greenhouse. Thinking that I knew I had shut it, I walked out and the closer I got I knew something was up. It had stopped raining so they were of course running around sloshing around in the mud and water. They both followed me into the greenhouse and that's when I lost it. Somehow, these two terrors; gone were my little angels, unzipped the door and then busted through the mesh window. I had left one window up for ventilation, and it was definitely letting air flow through at that point!

The trampled the Palmer Sedum and made it to the back of the crushing things that were in their way to their prize. I've decided that certain succulents must put out more appealing smells because they bypassed a lot to get to the one in the back. And out of that pot, they only dug up the one.

The Sanseveria's took a nice hit too.

Needless to say, I sprayed the Boundary stuff all around the greenhouse and put bricks at the bottom of the door's zippers to keep them out. They got a pretty good tongue lashing too. They're lucky that I didn't catch them doing it or they'd have been in bigger trouble.
I sat there thinking, "I could participate, but I don't know if I have anything blue." I came back to my blog and look at that...Hedgie's cage is blue!

It's really funny to watch Charlie and Hedgie socialize with each other. He's huge for one thing and she never paid any attention to Goldie, but for whatever reason she will sit in her cage and let him lick her. He's not hurting her and she's not trying to bite him, so I guess they're fine.

Hedgie by herself is driving us bananas! In the last two weeks, she's starting demanding food every time someone walks by. This is hard to avoid since she's in the front room and she can hear you coming from whatever direction. Forget the fact that the dogs are all over the place and that will set off her chomping the cage for food as well. We've all been trying to convince Shelby that we need to find a new home for her to no avail. I like her, but believe me when I say that this is the last guinea pig this momma's gonna fall for! The dog's are more than enough at this stage.

She is really cute though.

Let me clarify my mother's comment though before anyone gets offended. I will cry like a baby when Hedgie passes away, I did with the last guinea as well. That said, she's been with us much longer than expected and with two shepard/lab 6 month old terrors, my hands are a little full. My 11 year old can't bear to part with her guinea, but yet isn't a whole lot of help with her either. I'm working on convincing her to let us find her a new home, but in the meantime, I'll have to keep enjoying her until her time comes to an end. Now it's really going to be something if Miss Hedgie decides to be one of those lifer guinea pigs, I won't promise not to complain, but I will keep feeding her.
I have a habit of picking up a number of books and then putting them on my bookcases for a rainy day. That's how I came to this next series. Only I found the first book at my favorite Half Price Books and had to order the following two from Amazon while reading the first because I knew I would drive myself crazy hunting for them around town.

It's an older series, published between 2008 and 2009. There are three books in the Fairlawn Series, Doesn't She Look Natural, She Always Wore Red and She's in a Better Place.

The series starts with Jennifer Graham who is recently divorced and is living with her mother along with two young sons. She receives a call from an attorney advising her that she's been named the benefactor of her uncle's funeral home, Fairlawn, in a small town in Florida. Her intent is to visit for the summer, assess the situation and put it up for sell to generate much needed funds. Little does she know that she will fall in love with the odd little town and equally odd inhabitants. Friendships will be developed and Jennifer realizes that there's an entirely different side to life than the busy, non-stop lifestyle she was accustomed to in her previous life. In the small town, her little family flourishes; not without the expected bumps that come with two young boys growing up into young men, but in time everyone comes around. Leaving her background of working in Congress, Jennifer feels pulled to pick up where her uncle left off and take on the business of funerals. She quickly finds that it's got very little to burying the deceased, but rather ministering to their loved ones left behind. What she once found frightening and unsettling, she learns to approach with a tenderness that is deserved of those whose services are held in their home.

You'd think that being set in a funeral home would set a rather somber backdrop, but it's quite the opposite. Sure there are tears, but there are more laughable moments throughout the three book series. These are the first books I've read by Angela Hunt and I'm looking forward to reading others. I do believe I have several waiting for that rainy day...
